How and where to use guide
VELUX Standard Flashings 78x98cm EDL MK04 0000
Suitable applications and roof types
This flashing is engineered for use on pitched roofs with timber construction graded F16 or above. It is suitable for both new build installations where the roof structure is being constructed and retrofit applications where you are installing a skylight into an existing roof. The 78 x 98cm size accommodates standard roof spaces, making it a versatile choice for typical domestic and light commercial roofing projects.
- New build roof installations with timber frame F16 and above
- Retrofit installations into existing pitched roofs
- Standard roof spaces with compatible VELUX skylight models
- Both residential and light commercial applications
Installation and positioning
The flashing must be installed around the perimeter of your VELUX EDL MK04 0000 skylight or compatible model before the roof covering is laid. Position the flashing so it sits flush against the skylight frame, ensuring the plastic material creates a continuous seal. The flashing dimensions of 78 x 98cm are designed to overlap the roof structure adequately, allowing the roof tiles or slates to sit over the upper edge and under the lower edge of the flashing. This overlapping arrangement is essential for directing water away from the skylight opening.
- Install flashing before laying roof covering
- Position flush against skylight frame for continuous seal
- Ensure upper roof covering overlaps the top edge
- Lower roof covering sits under the bottom edge
- Check alignment with skylight model before securing
Timber grade requirements and limitations
This flashing is only suitable for use with timber grades F16 and above. Verify your roof timber grading before purchase, as use on lower-grade timber may not provide adequate structural support or durability. The high-quality plastic construction is durable and weather-resistant, but the flashing is designed specifically to work with the structural integrity of F16-grade timber and above. Do not attempt to use this flashing on roofs with timber graded below F16.
- Confirm roof timber is graded F16 or above
- Do not use on lower-grade timber
- Check timber certification before installation
Maintenance and on-site handling
Once installed, the plastic flashing requires minimal maintenance. Periodically inspect the seal around the skylight, particularly after severe weather, to ensure no debris has accumulated or damaged the flashing. During installation, handle the flashing carefully to avoid cracking or warping the plastic. Store on-site in a dry location away from direct sunlight before installation. Ensure the flashing is not bent or twisted during transport or handling, as this may compromise the weather-tight seal when installed.
- Inspect seal periodically for debris or damage
- Store in dry conditions away from direct sunlight before use
- Handle carefully to avoid cracking or warping plastic
- Do not bend or twist during transport
