How and where to use guide

Jeld-Wen 35mm door. Paint Grade Premium, 1981 x 686 mm.

Typical applications and suitability

This door is intended for internal partition walls in residential properties, offices, and light commercial spaces. Common applications include bedroom doors, cupboard doors, and general internal room separation. The paint grade veneer and unfinished state make it ideal for properties where a uniform painted finish is desired throughout. The 686 mm width suits standard single-leaf doorways. The trimmable design is particularly advantageous in older properties or refurbishment work where door frame dimensions may vary slightly from modern standards, allowing on-site adjustment to fit existing openings.

  • Bedrooms, living spaces, and general internal rooms
  • Refurbishment and retrofit projects where frame adjustment is needed
  • Properties requiring a uniform painted finish
  • Cost-sensitive projects where premium lacquered finishes are not required
  • Not suitable for external doors, bathrooms, or high-moisture areas

Installation and preparation

Before installation, inspect the door for damage and ensure your frame opening matches the stated dimensions of 1981 × 686 mm. The lipped construction on both long edges simplifies alignment during hanging and reduces the risk of edge damage during fitting. If trimming is required to fit your opening, this should be carried out before painting using a sharp handsaw or circular saw, taking care to maintain square edges. Ensure the frame is plumb and square before hanging. The door should be hung using three hinges for stability. Allow adequate clearance at the top, bottom, and sides as per standard building practice, typically 2–3 mm.

  • Check opening dimensions and inspect door for transit damage
  • Trim if necessary using sharp tools before painting
  • Ensure frame is plumb and square
  • Use three hinges for secure hanging
  • Maintain 2–3 mm clearance around edges for operation

Finishing and decoration

The door is supplied completely unfinished with unlacquered veneer faces. It must be painted or otherwise finished before use. Prepare the surface by lightly sanding with fine-grit abrasive paper to improve paint adhesion. Apply a primer suitable for timber veneer, then apply your chosen topcoat paint in at least two coats. The unlacquered veneer accepts standard interior paints well. Ensure all surfaces, including the lipped edges, are finished to prevent moisture ingress and to achieve a professional appearance. Allow adequate drying time between coats as per paint manufacturer instructions.

  • Sand lightly with fine-grit paper before priming
  • Apply timber primer to all surfaces
  • Apply at least two coats of interior paint
  • Finish all edges, including lippings, for protection and appearance
  • Follow paint manufacturer drying times between coats

Maintenance and limitations

Once painted, maintain the door by keeping it clean and dry. The 35 mm core and veneer construction are suitable for internal use only and should not be exposed to external weather or prolonged moisture. Avoid use in bathrooms, kitchens, or other high-moisture areas unless additional protective measures such as moisture-resistant paint or sealant are applied. The door is not fire-rated and should not be used where fire safety certification is required. Inspect periodically for signs of paint wear or damage and touch up as needed to maintain protection and appearance. Do not use in areas subject to impact or heavy wear without additional protective measures.

  • Internal use only – not suitable for external doors
  • Avoid high-moisture environments such as bathrooms without additional protection
  • Not fire-rated – check building regulations for your application
  • Touch up paint damage promptly to prevent moisture ingress
  • Inspect hinges and hardware regularly for wear
