What Hardie Backer is for
Hardie Backer backerboard is engineered for areas where moisture, heat or heavy tile loads demand superior performance. It resists swelling, mould and moisture penetration, making it essential in bathrooms, shower enclosures, kitchens and utility rooms. Its A1 fire rating and non-combustible properties also make it suitable for fireplace surrounds and other high-heat applications where building regulations require fire-resistant materials.

Compatibility and surface preparation
Hardie Backer is compatible with standard tile adhesives and grouts. Before installation, ensure the substrate is sound, level and structurally adequate to support the board and finished tiling. The board should be fixed to timber or metal studs at 400mm centres maximum using corrosion-resistant fasteners. Allow adequate ventilation behind the board to prevent moisture accumulation. Check that your wall framing can support the weight of the backerboard plus tiles and adhesive.

Pack contents and sizing
Each board measures 1200mm x 800mm x 12mm thickness. This single sheet provides 0.96 square metres of coverage. The 12mm thickness is suitable for most domestic tiling applications. Lightweight construction makes handling straightforward for one person, though assistance is recommended for larger installations.

Cutting and installation
Hardie Backer cuts easily using standard tools such as a handsaw, circular saw or utility knife. Score and snap method works well for straight cuts. Dust extraction is recommended when cutting. Fix boards using corrosion-resistant screws spaced at 200mm centres around edges and 300mm centres across the field. Stagger joints and tape seams with alkali-resistant mesh tape and cement-based joint compound before tiling. Allow joint compound to cure fully before applying tile adhesive.
