Typical applications

Hardie Backer is suitable for use in bathrooms, shower enclosures, kitchens, utility rooms, and areas around fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. Its A1 fire rating and non-combustible properties make it the preferred choice for high-heat applications where standard plasterboard would be unsuitable. The board performs well behind ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, and natural stone finishes in both domestic and commercial projects.

Installation and preparation

Hardie Backer should be fixed to timber or metal studs using corrosion-resistant fasteners spaced at 200mm centres. The board cuts easily with a standard handsaw or power saw, and edges can be shaped to accommodate pipes and fittings. Ensure studs are level and properly spaced to support the board without flexing. The smooth surface requires no additional preparation before tiling; simply apply tile adhesive directly to the board using a notched trowel appropriate to your tile size.

Moisture and durability benefits

Unlike standard plasterboard, Hardie Backer resists moisture penetration, swelling, and mould growth, making it ideal for bathrooms and wet areas where conventional substrates would deteriorate. Its fibre cement composition ensures dimensional stability even in high-humidity environments, preventing movement that could crack grout or dislodge tiles. This stability also supports the weight of heavy materials such as natural stone without sagging or flexing.

Safety and maintenance

Hardie Backer is fully non-combustible with an A1 fire rating, making it suitable for use in fire-risk areas including around fireplaces, wood burners, and high-heat appliances. Once tiled, the board requires no further maintenance; simply clean tiles as normal. The board itself does not require sealing or protective coatings. When cutting on site, wear a dust mask to avoid inhaling fine particles.
