How and where to use guide

20mm Ballast 25Kg

Typical applications

20mm ballast is suitable for producing concrete for general building and construction purposes. Common uses include concrete bases, foundations, paths, driveways, and structural concrete where standard strength concrete is acceptable.

  • Concrete bases for sheds, garages and outbuildings
  • Garden paths and patio bases
  • Driveway and hardstanding concrete
  • General foundation work and ground beams
  • Concrete for fence posts and gate pillars

How to use

Mix the ballast with cement and water to produce concrete. The standard ratio for general purpose concrete is typically 1 part cement to 4 parts ballast by volume, adjusted with water until you achieve the desired consistency. Ensure thorough mixing to distribute cement evenly throughout the aggregate. For consistent results, use a concrete mixer rather than hand mixing for larger batches.

  • Measure ballast and cement accurately using a bucket or gauge box
  • Add water gradually whilst mixing to reach workable consistency
  • Mix for at least 2-3 minutes until the concrete is uniform in colour
  • Use the concrete promptly after mixing; do not allow it to begin setting before placement
  • Compact the concrete into formwork to remove air pockets

Limitations and considerations

20mm ballast is a general-purpose aggregate and is not suitable for applications requiring specialist concrete mixes. Do not use for exposed architectural finishes where aggregate appearance is critical, or for applications requiring high early strength or rapid setting. For heavy-duty industrial floors, reinforced structures, or where specific strength grades are contractually required, consult structural specifications and consider specialist concrete suppliers.

  • Not suitable for exposed aggregate finishes
  • Standard strength only; check design requirements for load-bearing elements
  • Weather conditions affect curing time; protect fresh concrete from frost and excessive rain
  • Not recommended for underwater or chemically aggressive environments without additional measures

On-site storage and handling

Store ballast in a dry location to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Keep bags stacked neatly and protect from prolonged exposure to rain. Check bags for damage before use. The 25kg bag size is designed for manual handling, but use proper lifting technique to avoid strain. Ensure the product has not hardened or been contaminated before mixing.

  • Stack bags on a level, well-drained surface away from standing water
  • Cover stockpiles with sheeting in wet weather to maintain workability
  • Inspect bags for splits or leakage before opening
  • Use within a reasonable timeframe; old stock may have absorbed moisture
