Typical applications and where to use

This rigid PIR board is designed for use in floor, wall and roof insulation across new build, refurbishment and retrofit work. In floor applications, the 175 kPa compressive strength makes it suitable for ground floors and suspended timber floors where it will support structural and live loads. In wall applications, it can be used in cavity fill, external wall insulation and internal wall insulation systems. For roofs, the board works in pitched roof, flat roof and warm roof constructions. The 150mm thickness provides substantial thermal resistance appropriate for meeting current building regulations in most UK applications.

Installation and handling on site

The 1200 x 2400mm board format is designed for straightforward handling by two operatives. Store boards flat and dry on site; protect from weather and direct sunlight during storage. Before installation, check that the receiving surface is clean, dry and level. In floor applications, lay boards tightly butted together over a damp-proof membrane or prepared substrate, then cover with a load-spreading layer such as plywood or screed. In wall applications, boards should be mechanically fixed or adhered according to the system specification – cavity wall boards are typically friction-fitted, whilst external and internal wall boards require adhesive and/or mechanical fixings. In roof applications, boards must be supported on rafters or joists and secured to prevent movement; ensure adequate ventilation where required by the building system.

Load-bearing capacity and structural considerations

The 175 kPa compressive strength of this board makes it suitable for load-bearing applications including ground floors and suspended timber floors. However, compressive strength alone does not determine suitability for structural use – you must verify that the board meets the specific design loads for your application and that it is installed in accordance with the building system specification and Building Regulations. In floor applications, the board must be supported continuously on a stable substrate and covered with an appropriate load-spreading layer before any structural or live loads are applied. Do not rely on the board alone to carry loads; it must be part of a complete floor build-up designed by a structural engineer or specified system.

Thermal performance and maintenance

The thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK provides high-performance insulation value and contributes significantly to meeting Building Regulations U-value requirements. Thermal performance is maintained throughout the life of the product provided the board remains dry and is not damaged. In use, rigid PIR boards require minimal maintenance. Protect boards from mechanical damage during installation and after completion – damage to the surface can reduce local thermal performance. In damp environments such as basements or ground floors, ensure the board is protected by an appropriate damp-proof membrane or moisture barrier as specified for your application. Do not expose boards to prolonged water immersion or saturation, as this will degrade thermal performance and structural integrity.
