How and where to use guide
Ecotherm Rigid PIR Insulation 1200 x 2400 x 50mm
Typical applications and installation
This board is suitable for use in floor, wall and roof insulation across both new build and retrofit projects. The 1200 x 2400mm format allows efficient coverage with minimal cutting on most standard building dimensions. Install boards with joints staggered to avoid continuous lines running through the insulation layer. Boards should be fitted tightly together to minimise thermal bridging at joints. In floor applications, the 175 kPa compressive strength supports standard domestic and light commercial loading without crushing or settlement. For wall applications, boards can be mechanically fixed or adhered depending on substrate and specification requirements. In roof applications, ensure adequate ventilation is maintained above the insulation layer where required by building regulations.
- Floor insulation: suitable for domestic and light commercial loading
- Wall insulation: compatible with mechanical fixing and adhesive installation methods
- Roof insulation: maintain ventilation above board where building regulations require it
- Retrofit projects: lightweight format reduces handling strain on existing structures
Handling and site storage
The lightweight rigid foam construction makes this board easier to handle and manoeuvre on site compared to heavier insulation materials. Store boards flat and protected from weather, direct sunlight and mechanical damage before installation. Avoid stacking excessive weight on top of boards during storage, as this may cause compression. Keep boards dry and away from sources of heat or flame during storage and installation.
- Store flat on level ground with protection from rain and UV exposure
- Handle carefully to avoid puncturing or crushing the foam
- Keep away from naked flames and high-temperature sources
- Allow boards to acclimatise to site temperature before installation in cold weather
Performance and limitations
The thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK provides reliable thermal performance for insulation design calculations. The compressive strength of 175 kPa is suitable for standard domestic floor loading but should be verified against specific project loads in commercial or high-load applications. At 50mm thickness, this board is commonly used as a single layer in retrofit applications or as part of a multi-layer insulation build-up in new construction. The rigid foam is not suitable for external weather exposure without appropriate protective cladding or membrane. PIR foam is combustible and should be installed in accordance with building regulations fire safety requirements, including appropriate cavity barriers and fire stopping where specified.
- Verify compressive strength suitability for specific project loading conditions
- Not suitable for unprotected external exposure
- Comply with building regulations fire safety requirements for your application
- Use appropriate cavity barriers and fire stopping as specified by building control
Maintenance and on-site tips
Once installed and covered, rigid PIR insulation requires no ongoing maintenance. Ensure all joints are sealed appropriately to prevent air leakage and maintain thermal performance. Where boards are exposed during construction, protect them from damage and contamination. On-site cutting should be carried out with a sharp knife or fine-toothed saw to minimise dust and maintain board integrity at cut edges. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment including gloves and eye protection when handling and cutting boards.
- Seal all joints with appropriate tape or sealant to prevent thermal bridging
- Protect exposed boards from damage and weather during construction
- Use sharp tools for cutting to maintain clean edges and minimise waste
- Wear gloves and eye protection when handling and cutting boards
