Fixing and buying guide

5.4Mtr X 47 X 125mm C24 Treated Regularised KD Carcassing Timber

Selecting the right grade and size

C24 is a strength-graded classification that indicates superior load-bearing capacity and fewer natural defects compared to lower grades. The 47×125mm regularised profile is a standard carcassing size suitable for floor joists, roof battens, stud walls, and decking frames. Regularised timber has been planed to consistent dimensions, making it easier to work with on site and providing a cleaner appearance than sawn stock.

  • C24 grade meets current BS EN standards for structural timberwork
  • Regularised profile ensures uniform dimensions for straightforward installation
  • Kiln-dried (KD) condition provides stability and reduces movement in service
  • Pressure-treated with preservative for rot, fungal decay, and insect resistance

Storage and handling on site

Proper storage protects the timber's treated finish and maintains its structural integrity. Kiln-dried timber is less prone to movement than green stock, but should still be stored carefully to prevent warping or damage.

  • Store horizontally on level ground or on bearers to prevent contact with damp surfaces
  • Keep timber covered or under shelter to protect from prolonged wet weather
  • Allow air circulation around stacks to prevent moisture accumulation
  • Handle with care to avoid damage to the planed surfaces and treated finish

Cutting and fixing

C24 carcassing timber can be cut and fixed using standard carpentry methods. Where the timber is cut, exposed end grain should be treated with a suitable wood preservative to maintain protection.

  • Use sharp tools for clean cuts; dull blades can crush the timber and damage the treated surface
  • Apply preservative to cut ends and any areas where the treated finish is damaged
  • Fix with appropriate fasteners for the application—nails, screws, or bolts depending on load requirements
  • Ensure fixings are corrosion-resistant when used with treated timber
