Fixing and buying guide

5.4Mtr X 47 X 200mm C24 Treated Regularised KD Carcassing Timber

Selecting the right grade and size

C24 is a strength-graded softwood that meets BS EN standards for structural timberwork. The 47×200mm regularised profile provides a consistent, planed finish for easier handling and a cleaner appearance on site. Kiln-dried (KD) condition means the timber has been dried to a stable moisture content, reducing movement and cupping during and after installation.

  • C24 grade offers superior load-bearing performance and fewer defects than lower grades
  • Regularised profile means edges and faces are planed for uniform dimensions
  • Kiln-dried condition ensures stability and straightforward working properties
  • 5.4m lengths suit most standard joist and stud wall applications

Pressure treatment and durability

This timber is pressure-treated with preservative to resist rot, fungal decay, and insect attack. Treatment is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications where durability is essential.

  • Preservative treatment protects against rot and fungal decay
  • Suitable for use in exposed or damp conditions
  • Treated timber can be used for floor joists, roof battens, decking frames, and stud walls

Storage and handling on site

Kiln-dried timber should be stored in dry conditions to maintain its stable moisture content. Protect from prolonged exposure to weather or standing water.

  • Stack timber flat or on edge with adequate air circulation
  • Keep off the ground using bearers to prevent moisture uptake
  • Cover with breathable sheeting if stored outdoors for extended periods
  • Handle with care to avoid damage to the planed finish

Fixing and fastening

C24 carcassing timber accepts standard fixings for structural applications. Use appropriate fasteners for your specific application—nails, screws, or bolts depending on load requirements and connection type.

  • Pre-drill screw holes to reduce splitting, particularly near edges
  • Use corrosion-resistant fasteners for treated timber in damp environments
  • Follow building regulations and structural design guidance for joist spacing and support details
