Fixing and buying guide

2440 x 1220 x 18mm MDF

What this product is and who it is for

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood fibres bonded with resin under heat and pressure. Unlike solid timber, MDF offers consistent density throughout, eliminating knots and grain variation. The 18mm thickness provides structural rigidity suitable for load-bearing applications in furniture and fitted joinery. This product is ideal for trade customers, cabinet makers, furniture manufacturers, and experienced DIY users who need reliable, paintable panels for interior projects. The lighter weight compared to solid timber or plywood makes it particularly valuable for applications such as caravan interiors and wall-mounted installations where weight reduction is a design priority.

  • Engineered wood product with uniform density and smooth surface
  • Lighter than equivalent solid timber or plywood panels
  • FSC certified for responsible forestry
  • Suitable for furniture, shop fitting, joinery, and exhibition work

Sizing and pack contents

This board measures 2440mm length by 1220mm width by 18mm thickness. These are standard European panel dimensions widely used across the building and furniture industries. The 2440 x 1220mm face size is designed to minimise waste when cutting standard component sizes. You receive one sheet per order unless otherwise specified. Plan your cutting layout before purchase to maximise yield from the single panel.

  • Single sheet: 2440mm (L) x 1220mm (W) x 18mm (T)
  • Standard European panel dimensions
  • Smooth surface ready for painting or finishing

Compatibility and applications

This 18mm MDF is compatible with standard woodworking fixings including screws, dowels, and pocket-hole joinery systems. It works well with PVA and polyurethane adhesives commonly used in joinery. The board accepts paint, stain, and varnish finishes effectively due to its smooth, uniform surface. It is not suitable for external use or wet environments without protective coating, and should not be used in areas subject to prolonged moisture exposure such as bathrooms or kitchens without appropriate sealing.

  • Compatible with standard wood screws, dowels, and pocket-hole systems
  • Accepts PVA and polyurethane wood adhesives
  • Ideal surface for painting, staining, and varnishing
  • Internal use only; requires protective coating in damp environments

Pre-installation checks and preparation

Before use, inspect the board for damage to edges or face. Store the panel flat in a dry, well-ventilated space for at least 48 hours before cutting or assembly to allow moisture equilibration. Ensure your workshop is at normal room temperature and humidity (ideally 16-20°C and 35-55% relative humidity) to prevent expansion or contraction after installation. Use a fine-toothed saw blade for clean edges; MDF produces fine dust, so wear a dust mask when cutting. Sand the surface lightly with fine-grit sandpaper (180-220 grit) before painting to ensure good paint adhesion. Seal all cut edges with primer or edge sealer before final finishing to prevent moisture ingress.

  • Store flat in dry conditions for 48 hours before use
  • Maintain workshop temperature and humidity for stability
  • Use fine-toothed saw blade to minimise chipping
  • Wear dust protection when cutting
  • Sand surface and seal cut edges before painting
