How and where to use guide
Standard Ogee Primed Moisture Resistant MDF Profile 5.49 Mtr 18mm x 148mm
Typical applications
This moulding is commonly used as decorative trim on shelving edges, furniture frames, and built-in units where an attractive finished appearance is required. The ogee profile adds visual interest whilst the 18mm thickness provides structural support for shelving loads. It is suitable for internal use in domestic properties, commercial fit-outs, and bespoke furniture making.
- Shelf edge trim and decorative banding on shelving units
- Furniture frame construction and edge finishing
- Built-in cupboard and wardrobe trim work
- Internal wall panelling and feature details
- Kitchen and bathroom cabinetry where moisture resistance is beneficial
Installation and preparation
The profile arrives primed, reducing on-site preparation time. Measure and mark your cutting points carefully before use. MDF cuts cleanly with standard woodworking tools; use a fine-toothed saw blade to minimise chipping on the decorative ogee face. Allow the material to acclimatise to site conditions for 24 to 48 hours before installation, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms where humidity varies. Apply wood filler to any cut ends and sand smooth before final decoration to ensure a professional finish.
- Acclimatise material to site conditions before cutting and fixing
- Use fine-toothed saw blades to minimise chipping on the ogee profile
- Fill cut ends with appropriate MDF filler and sand smooth
- Fix using wood screws or adhesive suitable for primed MDF
- Ensure surfaces are clean and dry before adhesive application
Moisture resistance and maintenance
The moisture-resistant coating provides enhanced durability compared to standard MDF, making this profile suitable for use in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas subject to humidity fluctuations. However, it is not fully waterproof and should not be exposed to prolonged standing water or direct external weather. Wipe spills promptly and ensure adequate ventilation in wet areas. The primed surface accepts standard interior paints and wood stains; apply a quality interior paint or stain to complete protection and achieve your desired finish.
- Moisture-resistant coating protects against humidity but not waterproofing
- Suitable for internal use in kitchens and bathrooms with good ventilation
- Not suitable for external exposure or areas subject to standing water
- Wipe spills immediately to prevent moisture ingress
- Paint or stain the primed surface for complete protection and aesthetics
Limitations and storage
MDF is denser and heavier than solid timber, so ensure adequate support during installation, particularly on longer shelving runs. Store the profile flat in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct heat sources and moisture. Avoid leaning profiles at steep angles during storage, as the material can warp under uneven load. The 5.49 metre length is substantial; plan cuts efficiently to minimise waste and ensure safe handling on site. Do not use this profile in fully external applications or areas subject to continuous water exposure.
- Store flat in dry conditions; avoid steep angles that may cause warping
- Plan cuts carefully to minimise waste from the 5.49m length
- Ensure adequate support for shelving applications, particularly longer spans
- Not suitable for external use or continuous water exposure
- Handle carefully due to weight; use appropriate lifting techniques on site
