How and where to use guide
Ovolo Primed Moisture Resistant MDF Profile 5.49 Mtr 18mm x 58mm
Typical applications
This ovolo profile works well as edge banding for shelving units, trim for display cases and bookcases, and decorative moulding on furniture projects. It is commonly used to finish the visible edges of MDF boards and panels, providing a professional rounded appearance. The moisture-resistant properties make it particularly suitable for use in kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms where standard MDF would be at risk of swelling or deterioration.
- Shelving edge trim and finishing
- Display case and bookcase moulding
- Furniture edge banding and decoration
- Kitchen and bathroom wall panelling trim
- Decorative internal wall features
Installation and finishing
The profile arrives pre-primed, which means the surface has been sealed with primer and requires minimal preparation before your chosen finish. Cut lengths to size using a fine-toothed saw, ensuring clean, square cuts for neat joints. Apply wood filler to any cut ends or joints if required. The pre-primed surface accepts paint, varnish, and laminate finishes well. Sand lightly between coats if applying multiple paint layers. Secure the profile using appropriate adhesives such as PVA wood glue for edge applications, or panel pins and glue for structural trim work.
- Cut to length with fine-toothed saw for clean edges
- Light sanding may be needed between finish coats
- Apply paint, varnish, or laminate over the primed surface
- Use PVA glue or panel pins for secure fixing
- Fill cut ends with wood filler before finishing if desired
Moisture resistance and maintenance
The moisture-resistant treatment provides protection against humidity and minor water exposure, making this profile more durable than standard MDF in damp environments. However, it should not be used in areas of direct water contact or external applications. Maintain the finish by keeping the painted or varnished surface intact, as this provides the primary protection against moisture ingress. In kitchens and bathrooms, ensure adequate ventilation to minimise condensation buildup.
- Suitable for humid indoor environments, not for external use
- Maintain the finish coat to preserve moisture protection
- Not recommended for direct water contact or splashback areas
- Ensure good ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms
On-site handling and storage
Store the profile flat and horizontally in a dry, well-ventilated space to prevent warping or moisture absorption before installation. Protect from direct contact with damp surfaces or standing water during storage. The 5.49 metre length is substantial and may require support at multiple points during handling to prevent sagging or damage. Allow the profile to acclimatise to the room environment for 24 to 48 hours before installation if it has been stored in a significantly different temperature or humidity condition.
- Store flat and horizontally in dry conditions
- Support along the length to prevent sagging during handling
- Allow acclimatisation time before installation
- Keep away from damp surfaces and water exposure during storage
