Fixing and buying guide
Concrete Coping Stone Once Weathered 460mm x 915mm (18" x 36")
What this product is
A precast concrete coping stone with a once weathered finish, meaning one edge is shaped with a slope to shed water away from the wall face. The 460mm depth and 915mm length make it suitable for standard wall widths and provide good coverage per unit. The weathered profile is both functional and decorative, creating shadow lines that enhance the wall's appearance.
- Dimensions: 460mm wide x 915mm long
- Once weathered profile for water shedding
- Precast concrete construction
- Suitable for garden and boundary walls
Choosing the right quantity
Calculate the total length of wall to be coped and divide by 915mm (the length of each stone) to determine how many units you need. Always round up and add one extra stone to account for cutting and wastage on site. Consider the wall width to ensure the 460mm depth provides adequate coverage on both faces.
- Measure total wall length in millimetres
- Divide by 915mm to find quantity needed
- Add 10% extra for cuts and breakage
- Confirm wall width suits 460mm depth
Preparation and fixing
Coping stones must be laid on a level, sound base. The top of the wall should be clean and free from loose mortar, algae, or debris. A mortar bed of approximately 10-15mm thickness is typically used, applied to the wall top before positioning each stone. Ensure the weathered edge slopes correctly to direct water away from the wall face. Stones should be tapped gently into position and checked for level in both directions.
- Clean wall top thoroughly before laying
- Use a mortar bed of 10-15mm thickness
- Check that weathered edge slopes correctly
- Tap stones level and ensure good contact with mortar
- Point joints between stones with mortar
Pre-installation checks
Before delivery or collection, confirm that your wall is structurally sound and capable of supporting the coping stones. Check that the wall top is reasonably level; minor variations can be accommodated with mortar bed adjustment, but significant slopes may require remedial work. Inspect the wall width to ensure adequate bearing for the 460mm stone depth. Have mortar, a level, and pointing tools ready on site.
- Verify wall is structurally sound
- Check wall top is relatively level
- Confirm wall width accommodates 460mm depth
- Have mortar and tools prepared before laying begins
