How and where to use guide

Smeed Dean London Stock Brick 215 x 102.5 x 65mm A1 Class (500 Per Pack)

Typical applications

London Stock bricks are versatile masonry units suitable for both load-bearing and non-load-bearing work. Their traditional appearance makes them particularly popular for heritage restoration, conservation projects, and new build where period character is desired. These bricks perform well in external walls, internal partitions, decorative brickwork, and chimney construction.

  • External cavity and solid wall construction
  • Internal brick partitions and infill panels
  • Restoration and matching existing brickwork
  • Decorative features and architectural detailing
  • Chimney stacks and flues

Installation and handling

Proper handling and installation are essential to achieve good results. London Stock bricks should be laid with appropriate mortar joints using standard bricklaying techniques. Ensure bricks are in a sound, dry condition before use and protect them from excessive moisture during storage on site. Handle bricks carefully to avoid chipping or damage, which can compromise appearance and performance. Follow relevant British Standards and Building Regulations for wall construction, including proper bonding patterns, joint thickness, and mortar specification.

  • Store bricks on level ground, protected from standing water and excessive rain
  • Use appropriate mortar mixes suited to the application and exposure conditions
  • Maintain consistent joint width and ensure full bed and perpend joints
  • Allow adequate curing time before applying finishes or subjecting walls to load
  • Check bricks are free from damage before laying

Performance and limitations

A1 Class bricks meet British Standards for strength and durability, making them suitable for most UK applications including exposed locations. However, performance depends on correct installation, appropriate mortar selection, and proper detailing such as damp-proof courses and adequate drainage. In severely exposed coastal or industrial locations, consider additional protective measures. These bricks are not suitable for applications requiring specialist fire ratings beyond standard building use.

  • A1 Class rating confirms suitability for general structural and exposed work
  • Durability depends on mortar quality and wall design
  • Ensure adequate damp-proof courses and cavity drainage in external walls
  • Not recommended for specialist high-temperature applications

Maintenance and care

London Stock brick walls require minimal maintenance when properly constructed. Inspect brickwork periodically for signs of mortar deterioration, particularly around joints and at damp-proof course level. Repoint defective mortar promptly to prevent water ingress. Avoid high-pressure cleaning which can damage the brick surface and force water into joints. Clean brickwork using gentle methods appropriate to the brick type and age of the structure.

  • Inspect mortar joints regularly and repoint where necessary
  • Use low-pressure water and appropriate cleaning agents if cleaning is required
  • Monitor damp-proof courses and cavity drainage systems
  • Address any signs of water penetration or efflorescence promptly
