How and where to use guide
S/K-90 1800MM KEYSTONE CAVITY WALL LINTEL
Typical applications
This 1800mm lintel is commonly used in domestic and light commercial cavity wall construction to support window and door openings. The 1800mm span accommodates standard window widths and door openings in residential properties. It is suitable for use in both external cavity walls and internal load-bearing walls where cavity construction is employed.
- Window openings in cavity wall construction
- Door openings in external cavity walls
- Renovation and extension work where cavity walls are present
- New build residential and light commercial projects
Installation and positioning
The lintel must be installed level and centred over the opening, with adequate bearing length on both sides of the opening to transfer loads safely to the supporting walls. Position the lintel in the cavity or within the inner leaf of the cavity wall as specified in the design. Bed the lintel firmly in a full bed of mortar, ensuring no voids beneath it. The lintel should be supported temporarily during installation if necessary until the surrounding masonry has been built up and cured.
- Install level using a spirit level
- Ensure minimum bearing length on both sides as per structural design
- Bed fully in mortar with no air gaps
- Support temporarily if required until masonry is set
- Check alignment before mortar cures
Limitations and considerations
This lintel is designed specifically for cavity wall construction and must not be used in solid wall applications without appropriate design modification. The 1800mm span is fixed and cannot be cut or modified on site. Ensure the lintel is protected from corrosion during storage and installation, particularly in exposed conditions. Do not use if the lintel shows signs of damage, rust perforation, or deformation prior to installation.
- Not suitable for solid wall construction without redesign
- Fixed span cannot be altered on site
- Protect from weather and moisture during storage
- Do not install if damaged or corroded
On-site handling and maintenance
Store the lintel horizontally on level ground or on suitable supports to prevent bending or distortion. Keep the lintel dry during storage to prevent rust formation. Handle with appropriate lifting equipment suitable for its weight, and avoid dropping or impact damage. Once installed and the surrounding masonry has cured, no further maintenance is typically required, though the lintel should be inspected periodically as part of general building maintenance to ensure the surrounding mortar remains sound.
- Store horizontally on level supports
- Keep dry to prevent corrosion
- Use appropriate lifting equipment
- Inspect surrounding mortar during building maintenance
