How and where to use guide

S/K1501350 KEYSTONE S/K-150 X 1350mm Standard Cavity Wall Lintel

Typical applications

This 1350mm lintel is commonly used to support masonry above window and door openings in cavity wall construction. The 150mm depth makes it suitable for standard cavity wall thicknesses and typical domestic load requirements. It is appropriate for single-storey openings and ground-floor applications in residential properties, extensions, and light commercial buildings where cavity wall construction is employed.

  • Window openings in cavity walls
  • Door openings in cavity walls
  • Single-storey and ground-floor applications
  • Domestic and light commercial buildings

Installation and positioning

The lintel must be installed level and centred over the opening, with adequate bearing length on both supporting walls. Ensure the lintel is fully supported along its entire length and that mortar beds are level before placing the lintel. The lintel should be positioned to allow for proper cavity wall construction on both inner and outer leaves. Allow sufficient bearing (typically 150mm minimum on each side) to ensure the load is properly transferred to the supporting masonry.

  • Install level and centred over the opening
  • Ensure full bearing on both supporting walls
  • Maintain minimum 150mm bearing length each side
  • Use level mortar beds for support
  • Position to accommodate cavity wall construction

Limitations and considerations

This standard cavity wall lintel is designed for typical domestic loading conditions. Do not use for heavy concentrated loads, multi-storey applications, or where loads exceed the lintel's design capacity. The 1350mm length is fixed and cannot be cut or modified on site. Ensure the opening width does not exceed the lintel's span capability, and always check structural requirements for your specific application. Steel lintels require protection from moisture and should be installed with appropriate cavity trays to prevent water ingress.

  • Not suitable for heavy or concentrated loads
  • Not for multi-storey applications
  • Cannot be cut or modified on site
  • Requires cavity tray installation for moisture protection
  • Verify opening width does not exceed lintel capacity

On-site handling and maintenance

Handle the lintel carefully to avoid damage to the steel surface. Store in a dry location prior to installation to prevent rust development. Once installed, the lintel requires no routine maintenance, but ensure cavity trays and damp-proof courses are properly installed to protect the steel from moisture. Inspect the installation after completion to confirm the lintel is level and properly supported. Any rust spots should be treated promptly to prevent deterioration.

  • Handle carefully to avoid surface damage
  • Store dry before installation
  • Install cavity trays to protect from moisture
  • Verify level and support after installation
  • Treat any rust spots promptly
