How and where to use guide

S/K1501200 KEYSTONE S/K-150 X 1200mm Standard Cavity Wall Lintel

Typical applications

This 1200mm lintel is commonly used to support masonry above window and door openings in cavity wall construction. The 150mm depth makes it suitable for standard cavity wall thicknesses and typical domestic load requirements. It is appropriate for residential properties, small commercial buildings, and extensions where cavity wall construction is the chosen method.

  • Window and door openings in cavity walls up to 1200mm wide
  • Residential and light commercial masonry construction
  • Standard domestic load conditions
  • New build and renovation projects using cavity wall techniques

Installation and positioning

The lintel must be installed level and centred over the opening, with adequate bearing length on both supporting walls. Bed the lintel firmly in a full mortar joint, ensuring no voids beneath it. The lintel should be positioned so that it supports the inner and outer leaves of the cavity wall equally. Allow sufficient bearing length on each side of the opening as specified in building regulations and structural design requirements. Temporary support may be needed during installation until the mortar has fully cured.

  • Install level using a spirit level to check both directions
  • Bed firmly in a full mortar joint with no voids underneath
  • Ensure adequate bearing length on both supporting walls
  • Centre the lintel over the opening to support both cavity leaves
  • Provide temporary support until mortar has cured

Maintenance and durability

Steel lintels require protection from corrosion to ensure long-term durability. This lintel should be kept dry during storage and installation. Once in place, the mortar bedding and surrounding masonry provide protection. Inspect periodically for any signs of rust or deterioration, particularly in areas exposed to high moisture. Ensure that cavity wall drainage is functioning correctly to prevent water accumulation around the lintel, which could lead to corrosion over time.

  • Keep dry during storage and before installation
  • Protect from prolonged exposure to moisture on site
  • Ensure cavity wall drainage is clear and functioning
  • Check periodically for signs of rust or corrosion
  • Maintain good mortar joints around the lintel

Limitations and important notes

This lintel is designed for standard cavity wall construction and typical domestic loads. It is not suitable for applications exceeding its load-bearing capacity or for use in solid wall construction without modification. Always verify that the lintel size and specification meet the structural requirements of your specific project by consulting building regulations and structural design guidance. Do not use if damaged or bent. Ensure all installation work complies with current Building Regulations and is carried out by competent personnel.

  • Verify load requirements match lintel capacity before use
  • Not suitable for heavy commercial or industrial loads
  • Check for damage or bending before installation
  • Comply with current Building Regulations
  • Consult structural engineer if in doubt about suitability
