Typical applications and surfaces
Thistle Bonding Coat is the correct choice when plastering over low suction or non-porous backgrounds that would reject standard finishing plasters. Common applications include concrete block walls, concrete slabs, ceramic tiled surfaces, and plasterboard that has been sealed with Thistle Bond-it primer. It is suitable for both walls and ceilings in internal environments and works particularly well in areas where a durable, smooth finish is required before applying decorative finishes or final coat plasters.

Preparation and application
Before application, ensure the background is clean, free from dust, loose material, and any contaminants. If applying to tiling or concrete, dampen the surface with clean water to improve suction and adhesion. Mix the Thistle Bonding Coat by adding clean water to the pre-mixed powder in a clean bucket, stirring thoroughly until you achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency suitable for spreading. The fine mix is designed for easy application, allowing you to spread, rule and Darby the plaster to achieve a level surface. Apply in a single coat of appropriate thickness, typically 8-12mm depending on background condition and site requirements. Allow adequate drying time between application and finishing coat application, following Thistle guidance for your specific conditions.

Limitations and site conditions
Thistle Bonding Coat is formulated for internal use only and should not be applied to external surfaces or areas subject to moisture exposure. The product is a base coat and must be finished with an appropriate Thistle finish plaster; it is not designed as a final decorative surface. Drying time will vary depending on background suction, ambient temperature, humidity, and ventilation on site. In cold or damp conditions, drying will be slower and you should allow extended time before applying subsequent coats. Do not apply in freezing conditions or to frozen backgrounds.

Storage and on-site handling
Store Thistle Bonding Coat in a dry location, protected from moisture and weather. Keep bags sealed until ready for use to prevent moisture absorption and deterioration of the product. Once mixed with water, use the material promptly and do not attempt to re-temper or add water to slaked material. Dispose of unused mixed plaster responsibly and do not pour down drains. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and allow surfaces to dry naturally without forced heating, which can cause cracking and poor adhesion.
